Hello Everyone! How are you doing? Espero que bem. Hoje eu trouxe para vocês um vídeo que particularmente achei super cool. E por isso decidi dividir com vocês aqui no 'Dicas de Inglês.' Este vídeo foi gravado no programa do JÔ Soares.

Nesta noite, o paresentador mostrou a tradução literal de algumas expressões que nós brasileiros costumamos falar. O problema é que quando traduzidas 'ao pé da letra' estas expressões não fazem muito sentido, principalmente, quando são escutados por nativos do idioma. Among ou Between?

Aqui estão duas palavras que possuem o mesmo significado de 'entre': Among e between. Mas como e quando usá-las se ambas têm o mesmo significado? Para entender a diferença é bem fácil, basta saber o seguinte:

Among preposition - /ə'mʌŋ/: é utilizado quando queremos dizer entre várias outras coisas (o que pode ser três ou mais), essa palavra pode ser utilizada tanto para pessoa como para objeto. Então se lembre: sempre que tiver três ou mais coisas ou pessoas, utilize – Among.

Veja os seguintes exemplos:

Ex1: Don’t worry mum! I will be among friends. (Vários amigos sem se importar com a posição)

Não se preocupe mãe! Eu estarei entre amigos.

Ex2: Among all these things I don't know which one to choose.

Entre todas essas coisas eu não sei qual escolher.

Between preposition -/ bɪˈtwiːn/: esta palavra é utilizada quando algo ou alguém está entre duas coisas ou no meio delas – Se lembre: no more, no less but two.

Ex1: There is a great deal of similarity between Caroline and her mother.

Há uma grande semelhança entre Caroline e sua mãe. (Entre as duas).

Ex: You’ll have to choose between me and my brother.

Você terá que escolher entre eu e o meu irmão.

So, if you are in doubt between Among and Between think about numbers.

If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until it gets so ugly you can hardly bear to look at it.

A person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.
